For decades now, it's not really, officially the holidays in Westerville until we see the Christmas Star hanging in Uptown Westerville. During the Great Depression in the previous century, to encourage Uptown residents to "buy local," the Westerville's Businessman's Association, approached the city manager with an idea and here is the history of the Westerville Star, as complied and presented by Beth Weinhardt of the Westerville Local History Research Center...
In ancient times the five pointed star, with one point straight up, represented all that is good and holy.
In the early days of this country, our forefathers used stars as a decoration to symbolize the strength of family and a deep respect and abiding love for God. The founders of our Great Nation adopted the star to symbolize the very first states on the very first flag.
The upper right and left points represent "Mother" and "Father", the lower two points represent "Children," and the top center always points toward the Heavens in reverence to the Lord our Creator. The original Christmas Star shone to announce the birth of Jesus over 2000 years ago; it's light and beacon of welcome to all who would come.
As a traditional tree-topper the star serves as a reminder of that light, the source of true Christmas joy.
In the depths of the Great Depression, the Westerville Businessman's Association led by Percy Yantis wanted to find a way to bring business to uptown and to make the holidays brighter during those difficult times. Yantis went to City Manager Ross Windom with the idea of having a large star hanging over the main intersection in the shopping district during the holidays.
Windom approved of the idea and local tinsmith George Alexander was commissioned to create the decoration. George Alexander, descended from one of the early mayors of Westerville, worked on the star with his two sons Russell and Nolan in his tin shop which was located where Green Cleaners is located today off of College Ave. George was talented not only in his work with tin but also was noted because he was the director of the Westerville Band.
The Public Opinion in its December 5, 1935 edition said, "The business section of the village has taken on a holiday appearance with the erection of the Christmas decorations. A noteworthy addition this year is a huge star electrically lighted and hanging high over the street at the corner of State and Main St. The star was made by George Alexander. Stores are now displaying their holiday merchandise and Christmas shopping will get under way in earnest in a few days. Shop at home is a slogan to bear in mind."
The star has been an important part of the holidays in Uptown Westerville ever since its debut. George Alexander, its creator, passed about in 1939 at the age of 55 after 35 years in the tinsmith business.

Tatjana says...
While red wine and apple cider are the most traditional of the spiced winter warmers, you can also use cranberry juice, white wine, hard cider, or ale. All of these beverages take very nicely to mulling.
The primary spice combinations for mulled wine or cider almost always include cinnamon sticks and whole cloves. Nutmeg, allspice berries, slices of fresh ginger, orange slices, and lemon zest are also good additions. You can find all of these spices in our Holiday Mulling Spice by Victoria Taylor Gourmet here at Meza!
▪ Simply place some of the spice mixture in a cheesecloth and allow to steep in the
liquid. Bring the mixture to a very gentle simmer over low heat. Don’t let it boil: this can cause spices to turn bitter.
▪ To really allow the flavors of the spices to infuse into the beverage, you should allow the mixture to simmer on the stove top for at least half an hour.
▪ Sweeten it up with some brown sugar.
▪ It’s fine to keep the pot warm for several hours, allowing everyone to sip holiday cheer throughout the night: a slow cooker on low heat is ideal. Ladle into mugs and serve, garnished with an orange slice or cinnamon stick.

Congratulations to WUMA members, A Gal Named Cinda Lou (20 N. State) and Hey Diddle Diddle (38 N. State) for their feature stories in the Columbus Dispatch on November 30th!
Hey Diddle Diddle, 38 N. State St.
Stacy Roberts celebrates Black Friday, but not because a horde of customers floods her specialty babies and toddlers boutique. It's because she opened her store eight years ago on that day in Uptown Westerville. Despite a troubled economy this year, she's still in business. And she intends to be around for another eight.
"When I hear bad news about the economy, I think, 'What changes can I make to keep myself out of a bad position?' " Roberts said as she arranged a display of plush animals that transform into toddler pillows and blankets. "You can let it bog you down and keep you up at night, but I'd rather think positively and figure out what I can do to make positive changes."
This sunny disposition of hers is what attracts many regular customers to her store. The high-end baby clothes and accessories by lines such as Petunia Pickle Bottom and Hartstrings are favorites of many of her clients and a draw that has kept Roberts in business when large national chains are reporting declining sales.
"People want that extra attention and are happy when they can come in and find that one special gift to buy because they plan to spend less and want the gift to be more significant," she said.
"Sales have been flat, but I do think it will get better because we're headed in the right direction."

A flood of warm, happy childhood memories greets many of the customers who walk into the small, retro-vintage shop on N. State Street. Those feelings and low prices have been a key consumer draw for the mother-daughter duo who opened the store two years ago.
Debbie Bennati and daughter Julia named the store after Debbie's grandmother. The long, narrow store is filled with records, toys, magazines, furniture, clothing and jewelry from the 1950s, '60s and '70s.
Although sales have been down in the past two weeks, Debbie Bennati said that because her store is a resale shop, it actually has benefited from the downturn in the economy. But, she said, the slowing sales make her wonder whether it's the economy or the weather that has kept customers away.
"Things aren't dire; this is not going to be a make-or-break year, but I am worried because sales have slowed," she said as classic rock played throughout the store. "People are scared a little bit because they keep hearing how bad a year it's going to be.
"I just hope that people remember about us small-business owners. ... We work hard and don't make much money, but we do it for the pure joy."

Uptown Westerville is A Place to be Home for the Holidays
The Westerville Uptown Merchants Association invites you to bundle up in your coziest warm and light up the holiday season for Home for the Holidays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, December 5th.
The evening begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall for the City of Westerville tree lighting featuring candlelight, holiday carols, and the arrival, via firetruck, of a very special, very honored, North Pole-based, jolly old guest!
Make cozy holiday memories in Uptown Westerville and enjoy the beautifully decorated shops & businesses, dinner, drink & dessert, extended shop hours, holiday specials, horse-drawn carriage rides, music, and other holiday treats.
After the tree lighting ceremony, Santa Claus, will get down to work, taking special holiday wishes from kids at North Pole: Westerville at Java Central, 20 S. State.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, December 7, 2008! It's a holiday parade! Have family fun, warm your hearts, and help those in need in our community with the Westerville Sertoma/Jaycees Annual Children's Christmas Parade.
Beginning at 1 p.m., and heading north on State Street, this year's parade theme is WARM Your Heart This Christmas, focusing on raising food donations and money for WARM (Westerville Area Resource Ministry) and Westerville Caring & Sharing.
The Christmas parade is also an opportunity for community involvement -- give yourself an early gift and gain recognition for you, your organization, your business, or your neighborhood by becoming a parade sponsor or by entering a float.
Sponsor levels include:
$100 sponsor- name and address is listed in program passed out the day of the parade
$400 band sponsor- name is listed in program, a banner with your name is also carried ahead of North, South, or Centrals Marching Band
If anyone is able to discount or donate a portion of printing costs for the parade programs that is also needed, and if someone wants to sponsor Santa's float please contact Chris Shaheen for additional info.

Today, Saturday, November 8th is the annual HUGGS Craft Bazaar at Robert Frost Elementary School, 270 N. Spring Road, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The HUGGS Bazaar benefits the ODF or Officer Down Fund for the families of Westerville Police Officers in times of crisis.
The HUGGS Bazaar includes 70 crafters, a raffle, a silent auction, wreaths, poinsettias, and baked goods.
