Uptown Westerville is a Place to Experience the Freedom Trail

I hear, I forget. I see, I remember. I do, I understand -- Chinese proverb.

Coming up October 2, 3, 4, 2009: The Westerville Public Library, Westerville Parks & Recreation, and Westerville Historical Society present Westerville's Freedom Trail: A Dramatic Underground Railroad Experience at Heritage Park (60 N. Cleveland).

Learn about Westerville's role in the Freedom Trail and live history by becoming a fugitive slave on the Underground Railroad.

Follow the drinking gourd... participants will travel to auction in a horse-drawn wagon and steal away into the cover of night, encountering conductors and abolitionists to guide them on their way north to freedom.

This unique event has 11 performances and is limited to 25 participants per performance:

Friday, October 2nd: 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Saturday, October 3rd: 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Sunday, October 4th: 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8:30 p.m.

There is a $10 per person fee. (Cash, check, VISA, or MasterCard accepted.) And, participants should dress to travel on foot in fall weather. Sunset is a bit after 7 p.m. on those dates. This experience is for ages 12 and up and the escape route is not handicap accessible.

Registration is required by noon Thursday, October 1st. (You can pay at the event, but admittance is limited to available space.

You can register three ways:

In-person: registration hours are Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Westerville Community Center, 350 N. Cleveland Avenue.

Online: But you need to pre-register to register! Prior to online registration, you must complete a pre-registration form that allows registration online for one year for other Parks & Rec events. Pre-registration forms are available at the Community Center or in the Parks and Recreation Department Brochure (the magazine that lists all the Parks & Recs activities.

By mail: Complete the registration form in the Recreation Department Brochure and send it along with payment to Westerville Parks & Recreation, 350 N. Cleveland Avenue, Westerville, OH 43082.

Contact the Community Center Hotline at 614.901.6500. The staff at the desk can tell you about available space for each performance and answer any questions.

Event participants can watch a DVD presented by the Columbus Freedom Center and the Ohio Historical Society is providing an artifact exhibit.

Uptown Westerville is a Place to Honor Zachary Myers

On September 8, 2009, Westerville resident & Delaware native, PFC Zachary Myers was killed in Iraq.

Zach was just 21, married, with a 14-month-old daughter.

Zach's funeral is this Saturday (September 19th) with full military honors rendered at Blendon Cemetery at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held on Friday, September, 18, 2009, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Vineyard Church of Columbus, 6000 Cooper Road. There is a 10 a.m. church service for Zach on September 19th before a procession to Blendon Cemetery.

The procession will travel north on Cleveland Ave. from Schrock Rd., turn east on Polaris Parkway, then south on State St. through Uptown, ending at Dempsey Rd., where it will turn toward its final destination at Blendon Cemetery for graveside ceremony and burial.

Zach's father-in-law, Ernie Daughtery, has requested Westerville residents line State Street and hold an American flag while the procession moves through Uptown Westerville at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Debbie and Jeff Mitchell of Serendipity, 33 E. College, are taking donations for a fund for Zach's daughter.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Meaningful Repurpose

Just a reminder that Friday, 09.11.09, the procession to accompany the WTC steel for The Crossing for First Responders' Park will take place. The procession begins at 10:30 a.m. at S. State and Huber Village Blvd. and proceeds north through Uptown Westerville to W. Main to the Fire Station at 400 W. Main.

A 9.11 remembrance ceremony is scheduled for noon at the Fire Station.

Uptown Westerville is a Place to Say Good-bye to Household Hazardous

September 5th is not just the beginning of Buckeye and Otterbein College football season!

Westerville Hazardous Waste Collection Day is Saturday, 09.05.09 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the Service Department Building, located at 350 Park Meadow Road. Enter from Schrock Road, you'll see signs.

Here's the low-down: Household hazardous wastes are materials that can cause injury or harm if handled or disposed of improperly. Hazardous materials include pool chemicals, acids and caustics, lighter fluids, paint thinner, turpentine, adhesives, non-latex paint, old gasoline, propane tanks, kerosene, weed killers, antifreeze, insect killers, mercury, batteries, and ammunition/gun powder.

Unwanted computers and computer-related equipment will also be collected at the site.

Non-acceptable items include tires, regular trash, items from schools or businesses, LPG tanks larger than 20 pounds, needles or medical waste, and appliances.

And, Latex paint can now be discarded with refuse, and will not be included in the hazardous waste collection.

This is a smooth operation, you pull up and they do the rest. A good thing!
