Uptown Westerville is a Place to Be Aware

Carrie Ryan of the Westerville Police Department reminds us during the lazy days of summer that we should still be safe:

*Thefts in the parks alert*

Hi everyone,

Thefts in the parks always increase this time of year, however we've been seeing quite a few during the last month. There are two main targets, bicycles and valuables in vehicles.

Please lock your bikes or make sure your kids have bike locks, if they are riding their bikes to the parks or pools.

Please do not leave valuables out in the open in your vehicle and lock all doors. Many vehicles, locked and unlocked, have been entered. Items such as: Ipods, purses, cell phones and GPS units are often targets.

Please report any suspicious activity or people hanging around vehicles in the parks to Westerville Police at 882-7444.

Be alert. Be smart. Be Safe.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Coffee House Music

Java Central, 20 S. State, has free entertainment this weekend, including Fourth Friday.

Adel & Diane Shadi and Ralph & Jane Denick of Java Central tell us:

This is 4th Friday week and this one should be great! The theme is World Bazaar and the international flavor can be heard in all the music – “Seen Tru” reggae band at City Hall, the Irish Duo of Phil Franck and Doug Rudy (of Yankee Celtic Consort) at the North Market Stage, and Tim O’Connor (who has played Java Central ) will sing Irish and Spanish selections at the Gazebo on East College. Thank the Arts Council and Visitor’s Bureau for all of this. If you haven’t experienced it yet, treat yourself on Friday to one of the signature events in Central Ohio.

Here is the Live Music lineup for this weekend - and beyond:

Friday 7/24 - Acoustic Open Mic (7 p.m. - 10 p.m.) Emcee Clay Justice, son Caleb, and friends Jim and Sean will give us a great night of music indoors too!

Saturday 7/25 - The Munkascy Showcase (7 p.m. – 10 p.m.) Mike and Cheryl Munkascy are professional performers who have been training music and stage performers at their Westerville Center for the Arts for years, including contestants on American Idol, Star Search (a Grand Winner), Miss Ohio and other events. They will showcase their talented students (of all ages) for us on Saturday.

Upcoming: On Aug 1 we will again feature the extremely talented Emerson Redlime and his 4 decades of pop/rock/oldies. He is one of the best musicians around, with great knowledge (and banter) about the songs he performs.

Join us for our great unique coffee (we custom roast our own select beans locally), refreshing frozen drinks, fresh baked goods, wonderful handmade jewelry and gifts (including Vera Bradley bags), local art displays (all for sale) and Live Music (no cover).

Uptown Westerville is a Place for National Night Out

United We Stand: Tuesday, August 4th is the 26th Annual National Night Out.

What is National Night Out? National Night Out is a night for neighbors, friends, businesses, civic groups, and communities to take a stand together against crime.

This crime/drug abuse awareness and prevention event is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Town Watch, Target, and local law enforcement.

In 2008, 15,000 communities, including Westerville, participated -- that's 37,000,000 people! (That's right, 37 million!!)

What does National Night Out accomplish?

• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
• Send a message to criminals (there are more of us!!) letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Want to get involved? Great! Here are some ideas... turn your porch light and security lights on (this would be a good time each year to fix or add to your outdoor security lighting), front porch vigils, block parties, neighbor get-togethers, cook-outs, flashlight walks, talk with local police, launch a neighborhood watch, and youth events.

If you'd like to get more involved here in Westerville, contact Westerville Crime Prevention Specialist, Carrie Ryan at carrie.ryan@westerville.org or call 901.6490.

If you are planning on a National Night Out block party, the city does have a permit system. So, Carrie advises:

If you plan to block off any streets for National Night Out, the form needs to be completed as soon as possible, it takes about 2 weeks to go through the process. So with 3 weeks out, please get the form in soon. You can drop it off to Amy Taylor at 21 S. State St. (second floor, right off the elevator), e-mail it to amy.taylor@westerville.org or fax it to 901-6401.

Click here to access the city's party permit form online.

Carrie also advises, "Please indicate if you would like a visit from the Fire Dept. The Fire Dept. gets pretty busy with requests that night, so it's first come first serve. You may request a visit and they will do the best they can, but they also come in order so it is possible they might not be able to attend."

Whether you plan a block party, turn on your porch light, or reach out to a neighbor. United We Stand on August 4th for National Night Out!

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Fresh and Delicious

Each week, the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is featuring more and more fresh produce!

The market colors grow richer as long days in warm sun and soil move us from the patina greens of lettuces and asparagus in the spring to rich reds, yellows, oranges, deep greens, purples and blues.

This past week, market patrons shopped for green beans, tomatoes, swiss chard, cucumbers, zucchini and varieties of yellow and summer squash, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes, onions, garlic, cabbage, jalapeno and banana peppers, beets, cherries, and more!

Market farms carry fresh eggs, poultry, beef, and lamb.

Certified-organic, chemical free, or conventional. Ohio Proud.

The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market welcomes new vendor Luna Burger - a vegetarian burger (perfect for the grill).

The market's artisan food vendors offer jams, jellies, chutneys, organic flour, baked goods like muffins, brownies, pies, cookies, coffee breads, fresh breads, specialty breads, and bar cookies, goat's milk cheese, cow's milk cheese, raw honey, seasonings and rubs.

As you walk through the market, notice the deep jewel tones of market jams and jellies in the afternoon sun.

And, look for personal care products made from food ingredients like goat's milk, oatmeal, coffee, and honey that include soaps, scrubs, moisturizer, lip balm.

You'll visit, you'll taste, you'll browse, you'll buy! Take your time and just enjoy.

Every Wednesday through October. 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. N. State and E. Home. The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market. Home-grown. Home-made. All Ohio.

While you're Uptown, the Westerville Uptown Merchants Association encourages you to Shop Uptown Westerville. Be sure to stop at Meza, 48 N. State, to find pantry foods and wines to compliment your market choices. Stop by and meet Tatjana Brown and enjoy Meza's Market Wednesday $1 wine tastings.

Uptown Westerville is a Place to Be One of America's Best Places to Live

Money says:

The heart of this Columbus suburb is the historic Uptown District, whose buildings look much as they did in 1858. Original 19th-century homes are interspersed with cozy bed and breakfasts; nearby Otterbein College offers quiet walkways and shade trees.

Many residents make the 15-minute commute to the city, although Westerville has also brought businesses into the area by providing tax abatements for new construction.

A community center built in 2001, plus more than 40 parks and recreational facilities, offer entertainment for every age.

WBNS Eyewitness News featured Westerville's ranking on July 14th, click here.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Fresh Foods and Fresh Ideas

The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is already in Week 10 of the 2009 Season.

The weather forecast is nearly perfect -- partly sunny and temps in the mid-70's -- so a perfect day for a trip to the farmers' market.

Speckled Hen Farm is scheduled to start this week -- featuring fresh eggs, chicken, and chicken sausage.

Carousel Watergarden Farm is also introducing fresh eggs this week. Stop by Carousel for fresh produce, rubs and seasonings, and Cathy's Tasty Treats for your favorite 4-legged friends.

We have a limited engagement surprise this week, Fredericktown's Z Blueberry will be at this week's market with fresh blueberries.

We will not see Nature's Honey this week, but Krista Wagner assures us she'll be back next week with her fabulous goat's milk soaps.

Sue Renner of Sue's Kitchen says it's blackberry season. Check out Sue's blog (click here) and see what yummy pies and confections Sue will have this week.

Doran's Family Farm will not be at the market this week - we should see sweet corn next week or the week after (that's up to Mother Nature!) So, check back, we'll keep you posted -- as soon as we know, you'll know!!

Last week, Batter and Bowl's cut-out cookie was... an ice cream cone! What will Sara Yates be baking this week?!

Each week, we see more and more varieties of fresh produce at the market.

A great place to meet friends, bring the kids, pick up dinner ingredients, taste new flavors, be surprised by unexpected finds, laugh and smile. See you at the market.

Remember to take a few minutes to Shop Uptown Westerville! Meza, 48 N. State, always has Market Wednesday features including pantry and wine pairing suggestions and a $1 wine tasting! Uptown Westerville is a Place Where It's Sew Simple to Help Others

My Very Own Blanket is an organization based in Westerville that provides personalized, hand-made blankets for children in foster care throughout Ohio. A blanket can travel with and stay with children, giving them a soft, stable, comforting touchstone no matter where they sleep and live.

Entirely fueled by volunteer energy, My Very Own Blanket has provided over 20,000 blankets to children since 1999.

My Very Own Blanket is looking for sewing machine donations.

MVOB's Jim Maxwell shares:

My Very Own Blanket makes blankets for children who have been taken from their homes and are placed in foster care. These children sometimes are picked up straight from school and taken to Child Services to be placed in foster care and have NOTHING of their own to take with them.

Many ladies and men volunteer their time and talents to make blankets for them. Some children have carried those blankets for several years.

My Very Own Blanket is desperately in need of sewing machines.

If you or someone you know has a machine that is just sitting around and is not being used, the MVOB volunteers would be most appreciative if you would donate it to them.

Do you have a sewing machine you could donate? Are you interested in helping MVOB?

▪ To donate a sewing machine, volunteer, or for more information, contact Jessica Hollins at
jessica.mvob@yahoo.com or call 614.530.3327.

It's sew simple -- something as common as an everyday blanket, can change a life.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for the Fourth, Friends, Family, Music, and Coffee

Java Central, 20 S. State, has music this weekend:

4th Friday was quite a success again and we want to thank the Open Mic performers (especially Christopher, Cody and Ian) for keeping Java Central up with the rest of the “celebration.”

On Saturday, Gary Puckett’s trio “R U Bound” put on a wonderful show of “roots music” – bluegrass, country, folk and
more. These guys are some of the best musicians in the area and play remarkable banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass - and
the audience loved it. We hope to have them back soon.

Here is the Live Music lineup for this weekend - and upcoming weeks.

Friday 7/03 - Acoustic Open Mic (7 -10 PM)
Official holiday or not, Java Central features live music on Fridays! Our Open Mic feature some
outstanding local talent that never disappoints. This is definitely not the “amateur night” that
other places have on their open mic nights.

Saturday 7/04 - Since everyone (including the Java Central partners and staff) wants to be with family at cookouts and fireworks on this evening, Java Central will be closing early. For one of the only times all year, there will be no music performance this Saturday.

Upcoming...

However, the rest of July is packed with music!

On July 11 we will feature Jeff Harper and Emma Brohardt (trumpet and sax) on our monthly Jazz Night.

Singer/songwriter John Vincent graces our stage again on July18.

Then on July 25 we will have a diverse showcase of the great vocal performance students (of all ages) of Mike and Cheryl Munkascy!

MISC: Our main room (“The Library”) is a wonderful place to reserve for meetings, receptions, recitals, training, and more. Please contact us for availability and for more information.

Also, our next shipment of Vera Bradley bags and accessories just came in last week. Come in to check outthe new styles and our great prices!

Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend, and come join us on Friday and before/after the parade on Saturday forsome wonderful frozen drinks and fun!
