Uptown Westerville is a Place for Road Work & Tornado Safety

Just some Uptown Westerville traffic reminders.

The Uptown Streetscape project continues, so you may experience slight slow downs along State St. from city hall north to E. Home. (Turning left from W. Main onto N. State can be tricky.) You may find construction cones, construction vehicles, and workers just slightly obstructing your lane or part of the sidewalk.

There will also be some detours beginning March 30th. The City of Westerville tells us:

Electrical work and tree installation is continuing on the west side of State Street progressing from north to south. Tree removal, sidewalk repair and tree installation will occur on W. Main Street beginning the week of March 30th. Traffic will be detoured onto W. College Avenue and Grove Street for the duration of this work which should be completed within one week. Signage will be installed in advance advising motorists of the upcoming road closure. Along State Street, traffic will be maintained with parking being restricted as needed within the limits of the work. The project is scheduled for completion by mid-April; weather permitting.

Additionally, on W. Main Street:

Tree clearing along Main Street has begun to allow for the installation of the conduit bank and manholes for the project. The existing trees are mature and due to their proximity to AEP’s facilities, will require ongoing trimming to maintain adequate clearance requirements. New trees, better suited for this location, will be installed as part of the project. Excavation for the installation of the conduit and manholes will commence within the next two weeks. Traffic will be maintained although lane closures will be required. This project is scheduled for completion by July.

And, while Otterbein College is on break now, when students return, just a reminder to take it slow along W. Main St. both day and night -- students crossing W. Main are not paying a bit of attention, so drivers just need to be more aware.

To check on local construction updates, visit the city website (www.westerville.org) or click here.

On Wednesday, March 25th, Westerville and Franklin County are participating in the statewide tornado drill for 3 minutes at 9:50 a.m. For more information on tornado safety and Wednesday's drill, click here.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Safe Call

The City of Westerville's free Safe Call Program was designed to support handicapped, homebound, and elderly residents in Westerville and Blendon Township.

Signing up for the Safe Call Program is easy -- just contact Kippy Shurman at 614.901.6790.

▪ Once you are enrolled in Safe Call, a computer will call your home every day at a predetermined time. If everything is OK, all you need to do is pick up the phone and follow the message instructions. You do not have to say anything.

▪ If you don’t answer the phone, the Westerville Safe Call computer will automatically call your designated key holder. This person will then be sent to check to see if you are OK.

▪ If your key holder does not answer, Westerville Police and Fire will be dispatched to your home.

(If you know that you are not going to be home at the time of your call, notify Westerville Communications at 614-901-6790.)

The Westerville Safe Call Program works!

Here's an exert from the the City's recent eNews communication:

On Sunday January 25, 2009 at approximately 8:30am the Communications Division received an automated phone call from the Dialogic Safe Call computer program advising that one of the Safe Call members did not answer her daily phone call.

The Communications employee who received the call attempted to contact the Safe Call member on both her home and cell phone numbers, as well as attempting to contact the pre-designated key holder for the residence.

Unable to establish contact with the Safe Call member or key holder via phone, the Communications employee dispatched a police officer to the residence to conduct a well-being check on the member.

Upon arrival, the police officer discovered that the resident was in need of medical assistance – breathing, but unresponsive. A medical response team was quickly sent to the home, and the resident was subsequently transported to the hospital.

Thankfully the resident had taken the time to sign up for the free Safe Call program provided by the City of Westerville Communications Division.

Uptown Westerville is a Place To Put a New Shine on Old Traditions

There's a lot of change in Uptown Westerville lately -- the city is planting new trees (ginkgo, coral crabapple, and lilac) and adding benches as the Uptown Streetscape project continues. And next time you are sitting at the light at W. Main and N. State, you may notice that Uptown Westerville looks much shinier lately thanks to owner Dan Aumiller's Holmes Hotel Building replica restoration of the hotel's original cupola.

In The News...

Uptown Westerville's small-town architecture spans decades of progress, so uptown business locations find their homes in buildings that tell an uncommon history.

Westerville Uptown Merchants Association
member, Uptown Pharmacy at 23 N. State (614.882.2392) is in a space in the Holmes Hotel Building that's been host to a pharmacy since the mid-1800s.

Spanning three centuries, as a place for people, Uptown Westerville remains a great place to shop, work, live, eat, meet, and play.

Here's the Dispatch content:

Construction Zone
Update brings back the past

Former hotel in Westerville adds cupola like it had 119 years ago
Monday, March 9, 2009 2:56 AM
By Mike Pramik

It's funny what a new hat can do for your image.

Consider the former Hotel Holmes in the heart of Westerville. Owner Dan Aumiller's renovation includes a new cupola to restore the 119-year-old building to its former grandeur. The building is drawing stares from passers-by and commendations from the local business community, which has been on the rise.

The old hotel, at 25 N. State St., is one of several commercial buildings selected as part of a planned walking tour of the historic downtown area known as Uptown. Information plaques will be installed on the buildings this year, as the owners permit.

"These buildings are a part of the real history of Westerville," said Beth Weinhardt, local-history coordinator for the Westerville Public Library. "We want people to realize what they were used for."

The headliner is the former hotel. Aumiller said replacing the cupola is about a $30,000 project. That's twice what it cost to build it. Durable Restoration Co. is doing the work on the three-story Queen Anne-style building at Main and State streets. In addition to Aumiller's Gun Shop, it houses a pharmacy, an art gallery, a coffee shop and a gift shop.

"That's always been a unique building, and this will give it a lot more character," said Tim Bullock, president of the Uptown Merchants Association.

The hotel site was the first lot on paper when the initial platting of the city was done in 1839, and James Westervelt, a relative of the city's founders, later built a log cabin there.

Weinhardt said a drugstore opened on the site in 1850. Four decades later, Thomas Holmes bought the property and had the hotel built. It had 30 rooms, space for two retail stores in the front, and a livery stable and blacksmith shop in the back.

"Because of where it is, it's still the pre-eminent corner in Uptown," Weinhardt said. "It's very impressive that the building will look like it would have when it opened."

Mike Pramik covers development for The Dispatch. Contact him at mpramik@dispatch.com or by fax at 614-461-5107.
