Speckled Hen Farm will open for business at the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market on July 8th, so we won't see Brooke at the market this week. Speckled Hen features fresh eggs, chicken, and chicken products (like sausage).

The 2009 Market Photo Tours for June 17th and June 24th are now available on flickr.com. So, click here to take the tour!

We've added a new set of photos to our flickr.com collection for this year's market -- Batter and Bowl's cut-out cookie!
Each week Batter and Bowl's Sara Yates brings a special cut-out cookie to the market for just $1 each. From Dragonflys to Tropical Fish, it's fun to see what Sara will bring this week!

We are pleased to announce that market vendors accepted $285 in WARM Fresh Green vouchers in May and June combined. WUMA and The Uptown Westerville Farmers’ Market support WARM. -- the Westerville Area Resource Ministry. WARM and the Farmers’ Market have teamed up so farm fresh, healthy foods can be available to everyone in the Westerville area: The WARM Fresh Green Program.

WARM Volunteers will be collecting non-perishables during this Saturday's Rotary Club of Westerville's July 4th Parade. Click here to learn more about W.A.R.M.

(By the way, the parade start time is 1 p.m.)

Weather predictions for the afternoon during market hours are a 50% chance of rain -- which is also a 50% chance of no rain! And, in spite of clouds, it's a cool day with a breeze. The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is open rain or shine. Shopping between raindrops just makes the adventure all the more interesting. Pack your rain gear and keep in mind, each merchant is under canopy.

Frijolito Farm has ended its 2009 market season.

Remember, while you're at the market... take a walk Uptown -- and Shop Uptown Westerville.

Meza, 48 N. State, always has Market Wednesday features including pantry and wine pairing suggestions and a $1 wine tasting! With a variety of foods and wines, including lots of made-in-Ohio, make Meza a stop for your cookout supplies on your July 4th shopping list.

The Westerville Uptown Merchants Association presents the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market. The market is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Wednesday through October at N. State and E. Home Streets. See you at the market!

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Coffee House Live

Ralph and Jane Denick and Adel and Diane Shadi of Java Central, 20 S. State, invite you to check out this weekend's music...

Last week’s Open Mic featured the students of Gary Puckett. Gary is a top banjo/guitar player with a great band and teaches at Uptown Strings. His students range in age from around 10 to 60+ - and they were great! Good experience for them; good experience for the audience. These were only a fraction of his students, so we hope to see more in the future.

On Saturday we had Karaoke Night with Art and Dave. These guys are the best – real pros who will sing and/or make you comfortable singing with all their props, lights and great sound system. If you like Karaoke, this is the best in Westerville.

Here is the Live Music lineup for this weekend - and upcoming weeks.

Friday 6/26 - Acoustic Open Mic (7 -10 p.m.)
It's Fourth Friday but every Friday Java Central features live music! Enjoy the festival, but stop in to cool off and hear some great music. Expect our regulars and a few new faces and voices. Consistently, the talent we see on Fridays is very impressive and entertaining.

Saturday 6/27 - Gary Puckett and his band (7 – 10 p.m.)
Gary returns with his friends to play and sing “roots of America” music – bluegrass, country and more. Gary and his friends are some of the top musicians in the area.

Upcoming July will be a diverse month, featuring jazz (7/11), singer/songwriter/guitarist John Vincent returns for another great show (7/18), and a showcase of the great vocal students (of all ages) of Mike and Cheryl Munkascy (7/26)!

Come join us for some wonderful music, drinks and fun – with no cover charge!

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Good Taste

Tatjana Brown from Meza, 48 N. State, shares The Meza Minute...
Dear Friends of Meza,

Summer is in full swing! We have greatly been enjoying all of the June wine tasting events, and are excited about what July has to offer!

Our next event date has changed due to Red, White and Boom in downtown Columbus. The 'Best of the US' wine tasting will be held on Thursday, July 2 from 6:30 - 9 pm at Meza! For those of you who love California Cabs, this will be a real treat. We will be tasting the current vintage of Faust Cabernet Sauvignon - an exceptional example of the best that Napa Valley has to offer!

We also have received several recommendations for wines from Traverse City, Michigan. This area is abundant with wineries and we have had several customers tell us about their wonderful experiences there! We will be tasting a late harvest Riesling from the Chateau Grand Traverse winery at the 'Best of the US' event!

Meza Launching its "Women in Wine" Series

For so long, the wine world has seemingly been dominated by men but today it seems that women are taking on new roles within this industry. In fact, women are making inroads into all aspects of the wine industry and are becoming winery owners, sommoliers, educators, and managers.

At Meza we are great supporters of female enterpreneurs and want to celebrate some of the award winning female wine makers in this industry! Each month we will feature a wine made by a top notch female winemaker and share with you their background and most imortantly, their wines!

Stay tuned for news on our next "Girls Night Out" wine tasting event!!
Become a fan of Meza on facebook, and receive updates on our tasting events and photos from previous tastings!

August

Affordable Pinot Noirs - Friday, August 7 (6:30 - 9:00 pm)
Pinot Noir may be the toughest grape to grow, but the effort is well worth the investment. Pinot Noirs forerunner and modest inspiration hails from red Burgundy, one of Frances most prized wines. Today, Pinot Noir is planted in regions around the world including Oregon, California, New Zealand, Chile and Italy. Join us in tasting some affordable and exciting Pinot Noirs from around the globe!
Cost of this tasting is $10 per person for 5 wines and light tapas.

Vito's Favorite Vinos - Friday, August 14 (6:30 - 9:00 pm)
Vito is my dad and today happens to be his birthday!

Much of my appreciation for wine came from growing up learning about wine through my dad and watching him make his own wine with my grandfather. He is also much of the reason that Meza is here today! Vito likes big bold reds and full bodied whites. So we will be pouring wines that he would be proud to add to his own wine cellar in honor of his birthday! This is a celebration of family as much as it is of great wine! So grab some friends - bring your dad - and come enjoy some wines with us!
Cost of this tasting is $10 for 5 wines and light tapas

Our last tasting in August has changed!

Wine and Cheese Pairing Friday, August 21 (6:30 - 9:00 pm)
Love wine and cheese?! Well....who doesn't! We will be pairing up wines to a variety of cheeses and learning about the rules of thumb of wine and cheese pairing. See what makes your taste buds tingle!
Cost of this tasting is $10 per person for 5 wines and cheese.

Have Your Next Social Event at Meza! Whether you are looking for a venue for a small group or you want to just join in the fun at our public tasting events, Meza provides a casual and comfortable atmosphere to taste affordable and exciting wines! So grab some friends and make your way to Meza for great wine and good times!

Interested in hosting a private wine tasting event? Looking for a unique space to host friends and to enjoy some great new wines? Uptown Westerville is a Place to Get Fresh

Here is the June 24th Market Report:

This week's farmers' market is dedicated to the memory of Carol Reinhart. Carol passed away this past Friday. Carol and her husband Woody have been great friends of the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market and are almost always our first customers each week. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Reinhart Family. The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is making a contribution to the WARM Fresh Green Program to honor Carol.

We expect a beautiful day at the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market, and it will be very warm and humid -- so remember to prepare first, for the hot, summery weather and second, to shop!!

We had a heck of a turnout last week -- thank you, Westerville! And, our vendors either sold out or almost sold out of produce and artisan foods.

While you are shopping, take a break and stop by The Front Porch (courtesy of Church of the Messiah, UM) and sit in the shade, put your feet up, and enjoy a cool lemonade or water at no charge! Last week, The Front Porch served up 400 cups of lemonade and water!!

Nature's Honey smells..... really, really good!! Stop by Nature's Honey and visit with Krista Wagner. Krista will be bringing back market favorites Coffee Clean and Honey Almond Bar. Krista will have free samples this week of her Goatmeal Bar (get it -- goat's milk and oatmeal!).

Sue Renner of Sue's Kitchen recently launched her blog -- and tells us she'll bring what she brought last week -- a broad selection of pies (including cherry), cookie stacks, cinnamon stix samples, and cranberry orange pecan dessert bread. (Last week, Sue sold all her pies in 40 minutes -- so if you want pie, stop by Sue's Kitchen first! Sue does take orders and will hold a pie for you upon request. Contact Sue at 614.588.6903.)

Doran's Family Farm will be at the market! Michelle tells us they'll feature berries, peas, squash, and onions.

Bildsten Landscape has now ended their 2009 market season. We appreciate Bildsten's beautiful flowers (Bildsten provides the Uptown flowers we all enjoy) that brightened our market each week and hope that you are enjoying your purchase from Bildsten. Thanks to Mark and Karen.

Last week's cut-out cookie from Batter and Bowl was... a tropical fish! Stop by Batter and Bowl to check out this week's surprise cut-out. The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is full of small indulgences (items under $10) and Batter and Bowl's weekly cut-out is just $1!

We will not see Bridgman Farm this week.

Next week, Mary will return with her fabulous produce (Bridgman Farm produce is chemical-free), we will be welcoming a new market vendor Speckled Hen Farm featuring fresh eggs and poultry.

Keep the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market in mind when you make out your July 4th weekend shopping list. Click here for the Farmers' Market Directory.

Remember, while you're at the market... take a walk Uptown -- and Shop Uptown Westerville.

Uptown Westerville is a Place to Say Thank You to The Greatest Generation

The Westerville Honor Flight Committee announces a special Honor Flight Pancake Breakfast fundraiser this Saturday, June 27th at the American Legion Hall, 393 E. College Ave. from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Cost is just $5 and veterans eat free.

The Community of Westerville is sponsoring an Honor Flight or Westerville WWII Vets on October 10, 2009.

The City of Westerville shares:

The Westerville Lions Club, the American Legion Post #171 and the Westerville Honor Flight Committee will host a Pancake Breakfast, with proceeds to benefit the Honor Flight. Members of the School Board, City Council and City staff will serve food and bus tables for breakfast patrons, many of whom will be veterans dressed in recognition of their branch of service.

Jeff Reschke, organizer of the Pancake Breakfast, says that while the Honor Flight is an established program, Westerville is the first to sponsor a flight as a whole community.

"The breakfast is really just the beginning of what the Westerville community is going to do for the Honor Flight," said Reschke. "Thanks to several community organizations that have jumped in to help, along with local businesses that have donated product, time or money, the morning is going to be a celebration of getting these veterans closer to this trip."

To learn more about the Westerville Honor Flight, click here.

Look for the Honor Flight Float at the 2009 Rotary July 4th Parade: Community Pride, Country Proud.

The project is scheduled for completion in July. For more information, please contact Scott Tourville, Civil Engineer - Planning & Development, at 614).901.6674 or Scott.Tourville@westerville.org.

Erma Bombeck once observed:

You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Westerville for making Westerville's July 4th Celebrations both memorable, meaningful, and big fun, year after year, so we can celebrate our community and country!

The Westerville Uptown Merchants Association wishes you a safe, fun Fourth!

Happy Birthday, America!!

Amish Originals Furniture Co. Launches Blog Featuring Amish Journal

Amish Originals Furniture Company, located at 8 and 38 N. State Street in Westerville, Ohio, celebrates its 17th anniversary with the launch of its new blog:

amishoriginalsfurnitureco.blogspot.com.

“Our goal is to provide information about our furniture and insight into the process behind it,” says Amish Originals founder, Doug Winbigler.

The Amish Originals blog will feature Miriam’s Journal: regular journal installments from a Holmes County Amish family.

Miriam will be sharing her life and the life of her family with blog readers. “In Amish culture, letters and journals are the Amish equivalent of our emails and blogs,” Winbigler shares. “To many, the Amish culture seems frozen in a time gone-by, and while their traditions and beliefs may differ from mainstream America, we all share the same everyday concerns for home and family.”

Amish Originals encourages readers to feel free to submit questions for Miriam as they follow along with her journal.

“Amish Originals Furniture Co. customers bring beautiful, handcrafted furniture into their homes and lives, and in-turn, their furniture purchase helps support Amish families and artisan traditions,” says Winbigler.

The Amish Originals blog encourages reader feedback and participation as well as providing information pertinent to the furniture-building process, updates on new furniture and features, and tips to help readers get the most from their furniture.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Farm Fresh

This week at the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market...

The June 10th (week 6) UWFM Photo Tour is now up on flickr.com.

We are starting to see more vegetables as we move mid-June and just a few days from Summer -- summer squash, cabbage, more varieties of lettuces and herbs, and broccoli. Certified organic, chemical free, or conventional methods, our market vendors only sell what they raise and grow.

Last week's cut-out cookie from Sara Yates at Batter and Bowl was a sailboat! It'll be fun to see what Sara will feature this week! Sara's cut-outs are just $1 and grown-ups and kids love them!

Another market favorite for everyone is a stop at Pleiades Maple Products, along with Ohio maple syrup, Eddie Lou Meimer features home-made, old-fashioned, maple leaf shaped, maple sugar candy and maple lollipops -- all under $1!

The forecasts call for rain today, but if the meteorologists are right (that means we aren't responsible if it rains!!) there is a 4 hour window this afternoon between 3 and 7 that has clouds but no precipitation. Fingers crossed!! The market is rain or shine -- so pack your rain gear just in case and remember, all market vendors have canopies - so shopping and chatting and browsing and tasting -- still happening between the drops!

The only absent market vendor we know about today is Frijolito Farm.

Remember, while you're at the market... take a walk Uptown -- and Shop Uptown Westerville.

Meza, 48 N. State, always has Market Wednesday features including pantry and wine pairing suggestions and a $1 wine tasting!

The market is a great place to run into friends (and family) and just enjoy the day.

Market insider tip: Big Thanks to Church of the Messiah -- the parking lot is now repaired and the surface is paved!!

Uptown Westerville is a Place to Support Pelatonia

This Friday, June 12th, Meza, 48 N. State is hosting a very special wine tasting:

Peletonia Race Wine Tasting Fundraiser
Friday, June 12 (6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.)

Tatjana Brown shares:

This is another great fund raising opportunity - we will be tasting Organic wines from Tortise Creek - all are organic and are under $12.

The tasting is not only to highlight these wines but also will help in raising money for the Pelotonia Bike Tour - proceeds from this event go directly to the James Cancer Research Center right here in Columbus!

Cost of this tasting is $15/person for 5 wines and light tapas!

(Proceeds of each tasting fee goes directly to the Pelotonia Tour and the James Cancer Research Center)

To attend the tasting, contact Tatjana Brown at Meza at vinomeza@gmail.com or 614.264.7244.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Expresso and Expression

Here's what's up at Java Central, 20 S. State...

Friday 6/12 - Acoustic Open Mic (7 p.m. - 10 p.m.)

Open to all who want to share their talents. Clay Justice will play his electronic wizardry, plus emcee and coordinate the regulars and new voices. (We will have our keyboard available again,by the way.)

Last week’s Open Mic was just great! – it featured 8 performers, including three wonderful new performers (thanks Jim, Sally and Tim!), plus the exciting Egyptian percussion vibes of Adel, Ed and Sharif. We closed with a fantastic jam – congratulations to all!

Saturday 6/13 - John LaFollette (7 p.m. - 10 p.m.)

John is an excellent singer and guitarist who performs a wide variety of rock and pop. (aka Acme Music, with Wile E. Coyote as a logo, if that gives you some clue). He is a former lead singer for several bands, now out as a solo.

Upcoming

Saturday – June 20 – Art and Dave KARAOKE makes a return visit! These are great pros with an excellent sound system, a full song list, professional lighting, costumes and accessories to help set the mood. They will sing on their own, as well, and even help you out if needed. We’ll even get Diane and Keri to sing! Great fun,
so spread the word.

Come join us for some wonderful music, drinks and fun – with no cover charge!

Uptown Westerville is a Place to Enjoy The Farmers' Market

The 2009 Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market Photo Tour weeks 2 through 5 are now posted on flickr.com.

The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is a place for people. Market patrons run into old friends, bring their children and pets, and meet up as they shop, taste, browse, ask questions, and buy.

A trip to the farmers' market is an opportunity to support local farmers and food artisans. An opportunity to know where your food and ingredients came from.

Meet the person who baked your bread, made your cheese from the milk of their goats or their cows, and grew your broccoli, strawberries, and tomato plants.A trip to the farmers market is a feast for the senses and an opportunity to share the market experience with the people you know and love!

A trip to the farmers' market is an opportunity to have fun!

While you're Uptown, take a few minutes to Shop Uptown Westerville. And, at the very least stop by Meza, 48 N. State, for their special $1 wine tastings and great pantry "go-withs" for farmers' market fare.

Enjoy the weekly photo tour.

See you at the market!

The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market is presented by the Westerville Uptown Merchants Association. The market is open each Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at N. State and E. Home Street through October 28th.

Uptown Westerville is a great place to shop, live, work, eat, meet, and play.
