A note on the movie:
This is the first year for the Classic Chiller so we have no idea -- we are just running it up the flagpole to see who salutes. We aren't sure how many people will want to see the movie, so due to budget (WUMA is a non-profit and for public viewing, we leased the film, so we pay per number of audience members, so we couldn't go too big) and venue capacity, we need to limit tickets. Thanks.

One more thing... our first string face painter cancelled on us Wednesday and attempts to bring in a back up from the bench were unsuccessful, so no Madness face painter for 2009's Midnight Madness.

Midnight Madness branching out in new, smashing ways

By BRET LIEBENDORFER

Published: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 12:06 PM EDT

If you're too old for trick or treating, Westerville still has plenty to offer this Halloween.Westerville's annual Midnight Madness will transform Uptown into a Halloween destination from 7 p.m. until midnight Friday, Oct. 30."We see Uptown Westerville as a great place to shop, work, live, eat, meet and play, and this is a center stage opportunity to do just that," said Linda Foor, event organizer.

The tradition, which originally began in the mid-1970s as a one-night, extended-hours sale for Uptown merchants, has since grown to be a community event. Think of it as a spooky Fourth Friday, organizers said.

Planning began in January and with nearly a year of preparations, the event has expanded from the decorating contests held between merchants who will still be offering special promotions and attractions."We divided the evening into kid-friendly event features (lasting from 7 to 8:30 p.m.) and the rest of the evening for shopping and grown-ups," Foor said.

One goal was to create new traditions.

They will include a four-story pumpkin drop and the Twisted Taste of Westerville, which features food and drink specials from local merchants.

"Some ideas became reality, some ideas had to be put on the back burner for other years, and some feature ideas sort of popped up organically," Foor said.

Hoping to extend Midnight Madness from its typical winding down around 10:30 p.m., Foor said one new idea they hope will prolong the event is the first Midnight Madness Chiller Classic movie for adults. This year will feature Alfred Hitchcok's 1960 classic Psycho on the third floor of Old Bag of Nails, 24 N. State St.

"There is something magical about Halloween and this time of year that so many people find festive and fun," Foor said.

For more information on Midnight Madness, visit the Web sites twitter.com/uptownmadness and shopuptownwesterville.com/MidnightMadness.html.

The schedule of Friday's Midnight Madness events includes:

5 to 7 p.m. -- community pumpkin display at the Rotary Park, near N. State Street and E. Home Avenue, prizes awarded

6 and 7:30 p.m. -- performances by Generations Performing Arts Center, 11 W. College Ave.

7 to 8:30 p.m. -- face painting, 39 N. State Street

7 to 8:30 p.m. -- horse-drawn hay wagon rides departing from Rotary Park at Home and State streets.

7 to 8:30 p.m. -- costume contest at the Municipal Building courtyard, 21 S. State St., prizes awarded for different categories including best dog

7 to 8:30 p.m. -- Mad Science! experiments from Otterbein College's American Chemical Society at 46 N. State St.

7 to 9 p.m. -- library stories inside Amish Originals Furniture Co. North, 38 N. State St.

9 p.m. -- Pumpkin Drop at the Church of the Messiah, 51 N. State St.

Midnight -- Midnight Madness Classic Chiller Movie at the Old Bag of Nails Pub, 24 N. State St.

Haunted Trail at Heritage Park: Also getting in on the frights is the Westerville Parks and Recreation Department, which is sponsoring a Haunted Trail from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30 at Heritage Park, 60 N. Cleveland Ave.Creepy thrills and crawly chills are guaranteed for those older than middle school age at a cost of $5 per person

Halloween event to take over Uptown on Oct. 30

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 2:56 PM

By JENNIFER NESBITT
ThisWeek Staff Writer

Uptown Westerville will celebrate Halloween a day early this year when the Westerville Uptown Merchants Association hosts its annual Midnight Madness event from 7 p.m. to midnight Oct. 30.

During that time, Uptown shops will decorated for Halloween and will be open late. They also will have treats, and some shops will have special Halloween-related events.

Also in Uptown, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., there will be activities for children, who are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.

The Westerville divisions of police and fire will have displays and interactive activities for children during that time.

The Generations Performing Arts Center, 11 W. College Ave., will have a Midnight Madness open house, which will begin with performances by its students from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

There also will be Halloween stories read by Westerville Public Library representatives at Amish Originals, 38 N. State St., face-painting at A Girl Name CindaLou, 20 N. State St., and a greyhound experience at DJ's Feed Store, 41 N. State St.

Dairy Queen, 84 S. State St., will have a community pumpkin display, where individuals, groups and businesses can show off their decorated pumpkins.

As part of the Black Catwalk Costume Contest, Midnight Madness attendees can model their costumes in an emceed fashion show in the City Hall courtyard for a chance to win a $25 gift card to Uptown businesses. Categories for the contest include kid, teen, adult, family and dog.

Also during Midnight Madness, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., there will be horse-drawn hayride through Uptown.

Those attending Midnight Madness can get something to eat as part of a Twisted Taste of Westerville. Uptown restaurants will be open during the event, and bratwurst will be for sale to benefit Westerville Sertoma.

Two events new to Midnight Madness include a pumpkin drop and the Midnight Madness Classic Chiller.

The Classic Chiller, which organizers said they hope to make an annual event, will feature the free showing of a classic horror movie on the third floor of the Old Bag of Nails, 24 N. State St. This year's show will be Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho."

During the showing, raffle tickets will be for sale for $1. Winners can watch the show with a guest seated on two upholstered recliners from Amish Originals.

Read the article online at ThisWeek, click here.

Blog Editor's Note: While we strongly recommend a stop at the Uptown DQ an the community pumpkin display is in Rotary Park at N. State and E. Home. And, our face painter had to cancel and our second string face painter couldn't make it, so no face painting feature this year.

Uptown Westerville is a Place for Good Tastes

Tatjana and Jason Brown of Meza, 48 N. State, present the Meza Minute

You Don't Have to Wait for Friday Anymore.....

At meza, we are all about the wine.

We are wine drinkers first, shop owners second.

It's been said that if you find a job you really love, its not considered a job anymore.

It's about living your passion. And we are passionate about wine.

We buy our wine just like anyone else.

The first thing we notice is the label.

We all love the eye catching, clever labels but if the wine doesnt back it up with great flavor, then it's just smart marketing. And smart marketing doesnt go well with fish.

We taste every wine that we sell. Sometimes we taste them a number of times over.

Like I said, we love wine.

All that being said, now is your chance to live our dream with us.

Starting EVERY Thursday night, we will be pulling 6 different bottles from our shelves to taste. If you have ever seen a wine that youve wondered about, here is your opportunity to taste it before you buy.

You may be asking yourselves How does this differ from the regularly scheduled Friday night tastings, that are always fun and exciting?

The main difference is the selection. Our Friday tastings are themed around specific regions or varietals. For example 2 weeks ago we had an amazing Australian wine tasting. We had one of our knowledgeable vendors here, explaining different nuances about the specific wines. It was very educational and informative.

With the Thursday night tastings, its anything goes, in terms of selection. We might pull bottom shelf wines only. Theres nothing strange about these wines, they are just on the bottom shelves and people might not want to bend over, we might pit Rieslings against each other, Germany vs. Washington State we might do a price influenced blind taste test, seeing if people can really tell the difference between a $10 merlot vs. a $40 merlot.

The bottom line is that the fun element that Meza employs at all of its tasting will never change.

Come learn about some great tasting, amazing value wines in a relaxed, casual atmosphere.

All wines will be $2 a pour OR all 6 for $10!

And don't worry The Friday night tastings will be happening in addition to this 2 great opportunities to try new, exciting wines and hang with friends!!

New at Meza! NY Wines. We took the opportunity 2 weekends ago to head to the Finger Lakes region of NY for a getaway/wine buying trip. We did some winery hopping and tasting and found out a little bit about what that region has to offer. Dr. Frank Konstantin winery was actually nominated this year by Wine Enthusiast as one of the top new American wineries.

Heron Hill, our second stop, boosts one of the most beautiful views from their tasting room as it faces out over Keuka Lake. We are hoping to soon be carrying some selections from the Dr. Frank and Heron Hill wineries since so many of our customers have been asking for NY state wines.

Be on the lookout for these on our shelves!

Fall/Holiday Private Wine Tastings

So many of you ask whether or not we do private tastings or tastings for small groups. The answer is YES!! We offer a casual, relaxed atmosphere where you and your friends can get together for whatever occasion: book club, birthdays, girls night out, bunko night, or simply a gathering of friends or couples who love wine!We offer affordable wine tasting without a space rental fee - we can also provide cheese/fruit trays or you can bring in food from your favorite restaurant or cake for a celebration!

We encourage those of you who are considering Meza as a venue for your fall and holiday get togethers and parties to contact us by the end of September. We are booking up quickly! We can offer you a comfortable and casual venue where you can host friends, family and co workers or clients - let us do the planning! We can help you chose a theme for your wine tasting selection that is both fun and budget friendly! E mail us at vinomeza@gmail.com to secure your spot on our calendar!

Dates to Note. Meza will be closed on Friday October 16th and Saturday October 17th. I have the privilege of participating in the wedding of two of our wonderful friends, and we will be celebrating with them! Please call us or e mail us prior to those dates if you have any special orders that need to be filled and we will gladly get them in for you earlier in the week!
